Ensuring Your Safety (Creating a Safety Plan)

Below are a few suggestions for increasing safety if you are involved in an abusive solution.

To arrange a personalized safety plan, Call RESPOND, Inc.’s 24-hour Hotline at 617-625-5900 for more information and referrals.

While in an abusive situation you can…
  • Try to stay in an area away from weapons or dangerous objects. Be aware of closest exits and telephones
  • Teach your children what to do in case of an emergency
  • Think of a code word to use with a friend, relative, or neighbor if you want them to call 911 for you
  • Plan where to go in a crisis
  • Leave money, copies of keys, medication, identification, medications, school and financial records with someone you trust in case you need to leave quickly.
  • Call RESPOND at 617-623-5900 or 781-324-2221.

Leaving an abusive situation can be very dangerous. Plan for your safety and trust your instincts.

If you have left an abusive situation….
  • Change or vary your daily routine
  • Ask a roommate or co-worker to screen your calls
  • Tell trusted neighbors or co-workers what to do if they see your batterer nearby
  • Consider filing a restraining order or taking other legal options
